Joseph Pilates would be so proud of the incredible advances in Pilates clothing that has been designed just to enhance the Pilates workout.
When searching for Pilates clothing, there’s a plethora of choices in both pants and tops that are perfect for the Pilates devotee.
Girls, you can check out the tops with halter tops, spaghetti straps, long-to-short sleeves and cross-over fronts. But there are two things ladies that you must remember when shopping for a top and that is to find one that allows you to really move and to find one that provides adequate coverage. No need to flash too much flesh at the studio.
There are also a wide range of choices when shopping for pants. You can purchase boot-cut, flare or straight-leg full length, capri-length or even shorts. If you really want to get just the right ones, look for Yoga or Pilates capris and pants with roll-tops that can be adjusted high on your waist or lower based on your comfort and based on how the pants respond to movements such as roll-ups and leg-lifts.
For the waist band in Pilates pants make sure to avoid belts, buttons, draw strings and elastics, all of which restrict movement. The goal of the perfect pair of Pilates pants is to find a pair that stays put, that doesn’t slide around and that doesn’t bunch up. Many people love the Capri and shorts.
So we figured out that there are lots of choices for the gals out there but what about the guys?
Yes, as you might have guessed, there are not as many styles for men in either the pants or the tops.
But not all is lost! You can find plenty of t-shirt style tops with long-to-short sleeves or even a sleeveless tanks. Same as with the ladies, men you must find a style that is fitted and not too baggy or too loose.
You want to be able to see your positioning and your muscles throughout your workout. If you are looking for shorts to wear when you do Pilates clothes then be sure to shop for shorts that are relaxed in the waist and don’t have any of that binding elastic or drawstring.
Stay with the lightweight pants instead of the heavier sweat pants. Why do we wear those things anyway! The goal is to find clothes that will move with you and not bunch up, slide around or embarrass you in any way.
Some people decide to wear shoes when doing a Pilates workout; however, the majority of exercisers use just go barefoot.
This is a personal decision. Some folks feel that shoes give them more stability while others feel that being without shoes doe the same thing. Talk with your trainer to decide what is best for you. But if you are going to wear shoes but sure to select a pair that is very comfortable, very lightweight and is completely flexible to allow freedom of movement for your feet and ankles.
Pilates shoes should not be too tight and not too loose. They must fit very well or they will cause more problems. In fact you should look for the pair of Pilates shoes that you can forget you are even wearing.
Pilates is an exciting and invigorating method of exercising. You owe it to yourself if you are going to follow the Pilates method that you will also take the time to select appropriate Pilates clothes to best benefit your workout. Yes indeed, Joseph Pilates would be very pleased.
Pilates Gear

Pilates gear selection may have become popular for many of a growing number of Pilates practitioners. This is especially true for women… who just happen to be more fashion conscious than her regular male counterpart.
You see… yoga practitioners have their own yoga attire, other sports and athletes have their own uniforms, but why is it that there is no designated pilates gear?
This question has often been posed to Pilates experts and trainers… and the answer has remain the same over the years. You can wear anything comfortable. Did you note that the key word here is comfortable?
It is important that you feel comfortable in your attire, whatever your choice may be, as you perform the exercises. There are just some points you have to consider as you look around for your pilates clothing gear.
While emphasizing comfort, you will be exercising, and as a consequence… when you do that, there are bound to be changes and shifts in position. You would not want to wear any type of pilates gear that is going to restrict your movements or just make it difficult for you to raise or move your hands and feet. That being said… you probably don’t want anything baggy or extrememly loose either.
While loose clothing may not restrict your movements, it could interfere with it.
Loose necklines can sometimes cause a bit of an exercising problem well. Even if you are the type that doesn’t mind showing a bit of cleavage… during the heat of the exercise performance, this kind of clothing tends to show more than what you may have intended, and as such you then end up doing cover ups instead of pilates dvd exercises.
Be wary also of gear styles that require tying into a knot either in front or in the back. When you are lying down on your back, this knot or in other instances, metal rings could be painful.
Pilates gear that you use does not need to be complicated or sophisticated. Many people favor light shirts. There are also those that favor cotton materials that allow your body to breathe even when you are exercising… even in an air conditioned room, it can get really hot once you’ve worked up a good sweat.
Pilates gear is offered by a variety of different sports brands that would suit any type of workout and would be a perfect fit for pilates.

So it is already clear that Pilates clothing is all about comfort, and if we are lucky enough we will find Pilates clothing that is a little bit fashionable too!
Remember that Pilates clothing must be practical so that you can confidently do the Pilates movements.
If you are constantly worried about your clothes and what they are or are not covering up then that should be a signal that you need different clothes!
Get shopping!
Avoid wearing the big, loose-fitting clothes, just because they seem the most comfortable. With Pilates you need to be able to see what your muscles are doing, especially the abdominal muscles.
So when you are doing your Roll Ups if you’ve got a huge t-shirt covering you up, then not only are you going to be unable to see your abs you are just asking for the baggy t-shirt to end up over your head instead of covering you up!
Forget the baggy sweat pants too since they will hide too much of your hips and knees and again you won’t be able to see what you are doing. Pilates clothes is designed to be fitted to your body comfortably and these not only keeps you covered but it helps you to be able to see what your muscles are doing as well as helps you to see your position so that you can make sure you are in correct form.
Check out the others in your Pilates class and see what others area wearing. Ask your trainer what is the best choice of Pilates clothing for you to wear.
Think about what best allows you to accomplish all the movements you will be performing and yet allow you to be covered up and comfortable. You should also think about the temperature in the studio since often times you will benefit most by layering Pilates clothing so that you can adjust if needed during your workout.
What strides we’ve made in the fabrics used in today’s workout clothes! Today’s fabrics give stability, stretch and comfort.
The majority of the active wear on the market today is made from material that lasts a long time, won’t fade out and won’t pill. Fabrics such as ClimaCool or ClimaLite are “breathable” fabrics which mean that they pull the sweat on your body away from your body in order to keep your body temp cooler during your workout.
So not surprisingly, these are perfect fabrics for Pilates and Yoga. Another added feature in today’s workout clothes are that many of those designed for women already have a good Spandex bra built right into the top. What an innovation!
It really is quite fun when you get to enjoy shopping for Pilates clothing as much as you get to enjoy the workout itself. The choices are many…shop smart!

Pilates clothing is all about comfort, well and perhaps a little bit of fashion.
Pilates clothing must also be practical and designed for the movements required by Pilates. So you need to purchase new Pilates clothing and don’t know where to start.
That’s the fun part!
When looking for Pilates workout clothes you must first of keep in mind that these clothes must stretch when you stretch, lie flat when you are still and most importantly of all don’t fall down, fall off or shift sideways when you move with your exercises! My goodness that would be embarrassing! Because of the movements used in the Pilates method you must have on clothes that are going to go the distance.
If you are distracted by your clothes and worried about them then your concentration is going to be on the clothes and not on the movements!
Wrong!
If you are working on the mat or on the reformer and your arms and legs are up in the air, if you are wearing loose well you better hope that you have on sexy underwear since you are going to be exposed.
Many who exercise feel very self conscious wearing form fitting clothes, but you will simply have to get over it, since Pilates requires that your clothes move with you and if they are loose they are going to move one way and you another!
One of the ever so wonderful gifts that Pilates has given us is that the Pilates Clothes and even the Yoga Clothes are so decadent and comfortable that many people now wear them throughout the day as casual wear.
Delicious!
So when you are shopping for Pilates clothes remember to look for breathable fabrics that skim your body but are not skin-tight fit in fabrics. Don’t forget that you want your clothes to give you freedom to move through the various exercises. Fabrics for all types of workout clothes, including Pilates clothes, have improved so much over the years leaving us with more and more comfortable exercise wear.
Like Yoga, Pilates is an exercise program that requires your complete concentration, and like we talked about before it you are tugging and pulling at the clothes you are wearing then you really have missed the mark.
You also want to remember that even though you want to find the type of fabric that is body hugging you do not want them to be so tight that you are cutting off circulation to parts of your body.
Well, now, that would really defeat the purpose of wearing the right Pilates clothes!
