1. Mat instructor – Training to become a Pilates mat instructor is usually available to those Pilates students who have demonstrated a basic proficiency in their classes. It is suggested that one should study Pilates for some time before taking a teacher training class, though unfortunately, not all certifying bodies require prior Pilates experience. Training for Pilates mat instructor will cover all the fundamental mat exercises, along with ways to modify them to cater to different population. Expect also that to be a certified Pilates instructor for mat exercises, you have to pass an exam that includes teaching demonstrations and written exam.
2. Comprehensive instructor – This certification delves more on the use of Pilates equipment. It is much more elaborate compared to the mat instructor certification. The prospective student here is required to have completed at least a year of Pilates study which include number of private lessons and the completion of mat instructor training. Also, to be a certified Pilates instructor for comprehensive Pilates exercises, the student should undergo fundamental education in anatomy and physiology, which includes the history of Joseph Pilates, the growth of the Pilates method, as well as in depth teaching on the exercises for all the Pilates tools and its modifications.
